A colony of bees consists of 20,000-60,000 honeybees and one queen. Worker honey bees are female, live for about 6 weeks and do all the work.

Once I have a queen bee, when will I have to get another one?

A queen bee can live up to 4 years but she is most productive for the first 2 years of her life so I recommend requeening a hive every 2 years.

What designates a queen bee?

There is only one queen bee per hive and she looks different then any other bee in the hive and her sole job is to lay eggs.

What is a drone?

A drone is a male bee and his sole job is to mate with the virgin queens. He has no stinger he makes no honey and he does not forage for nectar or pollen.

What do bees eat? What do you feed bees to make them stronger?

During times of the year when there are pollen derths, bees can be fed pollen supplement. And during times of the year when there is no nectar coming in, bees can be fed sugar syrup if they are light on honey.

How do bees know to stay with their hive?

Each hive has its own feramon (odor) that some of the bees will fan out into the air to help the forager bees find their way back to the hive.

Are there any health isues (disases) to worry about?

There are many different disease that can harm your bees. varroa mites carry the most concern followed by nosema and foul brood. keeping bees that are bred for disease resistants and the vsh trait is the first step followed by a good IPM (integrated pest management system) and proper nutrition your bee hives will thrive.

Is harvesting honey hard?

Extracting honey is not difficult but there is special equipment required.
